Ingredient & Herb Philosophy

In traditional chinese culture, food is considered a foundational part of postpartum care. Each ingredient is selected not only for its flavour and freshness, but also for its traditional significance in nourishing and supporting mothers after birth.

According to traditional chinese principles, commonly used herbs include:

  • Angelica Root (当归) – traditionally believed to nourish the blood and support hormonal balance
  • Szechuan Lovage (川芎) – thought to invigorate circulation and ease discomfort
  • Solomon’s Seal Rhizome (玉竹) – used to nourish yin and relieve internal dryness
  • Red Dates (红枣) – often used to tonify qi, calm the mind and aid digestion
  • Ginger (姜) – valued for its warming properties and believed to dispel “cold” after birth

Vegetables traditionally included in confinement meals:

  • Spinach (菠菜) – a source of iron, used to support blood nourishment
  • Kai Lan (芥兰 / Chinese Broccoli) – warming and fibre-rich, supports digestion
  • Pumpkin (南瓜) – naturally sweet and easy to digest, often used to nourish Qi
  • French Bean (四季豆) – thought to help ease fatigue and support milk supply
  • Bitter Melon (苦瓜) – used in moderation, traditionally associated with liver support

Mushrooms are also a staple for their restorative properties:

  • Shiitake Mushroom (香菇) – believed to support immunity and add depth to broths
  • King Oyster Mushroom (杏鲍菇) – high in protein and said to promote satiety
  • Wood Ear Fungus (木耳) – used to support circulation and gentle cleansing
  • Lion’s Mane (猴头菇) – traditionally associated with supporting cognitive health
  • Cordyceps (虫草花) – considered a tonic for energy and lung function
  • Stage 1: Warming & Nourishment

Traditionally, the first phase focuses on gentle internal cleansing and rest. The aim is to support the body as it recovers from childbirth and prepares for the next phases of recovery.

  • Stage 2: Rebuilding & Rebalancing

After childbirth, energy levels are often depleted. In this stage, traditional meals often include heartier ingredients, reflecting the cultural belief in supporting balance, comfort and gradual renewal after birth.

  • Stage 3: Vitality & Ongoing Strength

The final stage traditionally centres on nutrient-rich foods, with an emphasis on long-term nourishment and revitalisation for mums as they transition into everyday life.
